This subject examines the dynamics of the development of states and people at the macro level. We will explore the political, economic, social and cultural dynamics of development by interrogating the key frameworks that have dominated thinking about development from the classical and to the critical. We will utilise key models of political development, in particular, the Political Settlements Framework and the Developmental States Model. These framework helps shed light on how and why historically, different nation-states developed quite diverse political institutions. They help us to consider how different states are coping the challenges of globalisation and sustainability. The subject will use case studies of developing nations from Asia and Africa.
